English undoubtedly is the global language of communication which has gained importance especially in the commercial world. Today no matter where we reside in this world, we are easily connected by various means of modern communication technology using English.

However, effectively using English in the workplace requires a very specific and demanding knowledge of business-centred grammar and vocabulary. As such in this business-centred world, effective use of English for written and communication either at workplace or for international business is the only way one can achieve success.

Whether you are writing a letter, a report, a memo or an email, you must have good command of English as this will help you reach the reader or recipient, and get the result or feedback that you want. This 2-day programme will help you compose letters, reports, memos and email in various scenarios, overcome the common grammatical errors and communicate in an effective and professional way.

 

OBJECTIVES

METHODOLOGY

Interactive classroom lectures, demonstration through visual aids, samples of business correspondence and email writing, practical email writing by each participant, preparing and drafting various types of reports, and presentation of the reports by each participant.

  2. Explanation on the importance of grammar would be given, so that letters, reports, memos or emails are free of grammatical errors.

  3. Business Writing Skills

    1. The “Seven Cs” of Principles of Effective Business Writing Skills
    2. Correction on typical verbosity of phrases, sentences, paragraphs and business letters namely:
      1. Unnecessary words and phrases
      2. Wordy phrases
      3. Low information content words
      4. Redundant words and phrases
      5. The correct way of writing business letters

         

  4. Email Communication

    1. The 4 Rules for email
    2. Email Disclaimer
    3. 25 email etiquette rules applicable to companies
      1. An enquiry for a product and requesting for a catalogue.
      2. Introducing a new product to a client
      3. Placing orders of products
      4. Sending consignment by sea and air
      5. Offering an agency
      6. Enquiring freight rates
      7. Informing the importer of the shipment of goods
      8. Replies to all the above emails
      9. Other miscellaneous emails.

         

  5. Report Writing

    1. Informational Report

    2. It is presented in an organised set of facts/findings based on a situation or problem, routine matters which do not require any analysis of data.

    3. Analytical report

    4. Analytical report presents solutions to problems which are used later in the process of decision-making. This report requires conclusion and recommendation based careful analysis of the findings such as suggesting a Change, Improvement or New Ideas.

      - Report writing involving linear graphs, pie charts and bar charts.

Trainer's Profile
Puan Sharifah Mariam bt Syed Mohamed holds a Bachelor of Arts (Economics) degree from University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. She has more than 20 years of experience in the banking industry specialising in Letters of Credit & International Trade Finance, Business Loan Processing, Credit & Financial Analysis, and General Banking Operations.

A Human Resource Development Board (HRDB) certified trainer, Puan Sharifah conducted various English language courses (public as well as in-house programmes) such as Effective Communication at Workplace, Business and Email Writing and Etiquette, Elementary English (emphasising on Grammar), Intermediate English, Advance English (emphasising on Report Writing and Presentation Skills) and programme on Public speaking to working adults.

The companies and organisation that have benefitted from her programmes are Alcan Packaging Sdn Bhd, Malaysia Packaging Sdn Bhd, IT Services Sdn Bhd, Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), Mofaz Sdn Bhd, Umicore Sdn Bhd, Riverstone Resources Sdn Bhd, Shimano Components Sdn Bhd, DIC Epoxy (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd and many more.

Puan Sharifah has also conducted Communication English to front-liners staff of hotels, Immigration Department, Tourist Police, airport staff, souvenir retailers, cultural bodies and others who are involved in tourism, which was organised by Terengganu Tourism Board, Pahang Tourism Board, Johor Tourism Board and Tourism Academy of Melaka in conjunction with the Visit Malaysia Year 2007. She has also taught English language and Bahasa Malaysia in various government schools in Johor and education centres in Kuala Lumpur.

Puan Sharifah is also a certified translator from National Institute of Translators (ITNM), Kuala Lumpur. She has done translation, editing and proofreading works in all aspects of literary works, commercial works, news reports etc. in various fields from English to Bahasa Melayu and vice versa, attended seminars and international on-line seminars on Translation & Interpretation of English language and Bahasa Melayu.

She was a member of Johor Bahru Toastmasters Club District 51 for 5 years. She has completed ten projects of Communication and Leadership programme of the International Toastmasters Club and thus awarded the Competent Toastmastership Award.
