Most people care a great deal about good writing, especially if you are writing emails, memos and correspondence especially to customers. An unclear, garbled email can waste your company time and money. Too many errors can change the meaning of your message without your realizing it. In addition, bad writing makes a negative impression on the reader.

This course is designed for people in the business world or dealing with business or for those who have to interact in the business world.
This course is designed to benefit you with some strategies to develop and enhance your business writing. We will help you to become aware of your own strengths and weaknesses and help you increased your understanding of what makes successful writing. As a result, your professional documents will become more effective, clearer and productive.

 

COURSE AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The emphasis of the course is on developing the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing as well as activating and enlarging vocabulary in a variety of business-related contexts. Thus this course will focus:

  • To enhance the ability to write simple, compound and complex sentences.
  • Connect simple ideas using logical connectors and conjunctions.
  • Write coherent and cohesive messages, memos, letters and informal correspondence.
  • Write decisively without redundancy and jargon.
  • Use effective and functional language via grammatical structures.

 

COURSE OUTLINE

Session 1: Principles Of Effective And Meaningful Writing

In this section candidates will be exposed to the principles of writing effectively encompassing the 7Cs of writing effectively, namely writing simply, briefly, cohesively, coherently and accurately. The elements of redundancy and repetitions will also be dealt with.

Session 2: Errors – Spoken And Writing Discourse

This section of the course will deal with the errors Malaysian speakers make in their daily spoken discourse. The use of the Malaysian “lah” as an article will be discussed. Intonation and stress patterns, especially in the construction of questions will be discussed. The importance of tag questions as indicators of positive and negative response will be dealt with. Tone also reflects attitude and candidates will be taught to use the power of the tone to get the desired response.

Session 3: Parts Of Speech And Grammar

The nine parts of speech will be highlighted. Focus will be on the use of articles, use of “s” in plurals and the functional use of tenses. Candidates would learn to construct simple and compound sentences using the structural approach. Error analysis would be used to identify the root cause of errors and for their correction.

Session 4: Writing Effective E -Mails, Letters And Memos

This is a practical session where candidates would be given different scenarios to write. Each piece would be evaluated and discussed. Active participant involvement would require them to identify the root cause and corrected.

 

METHODOLOGY

This Two (2) days program will be challenging, thought provoking, motivational and above all fun. Candidates will use a variety of learning tools including workshops, games, real life scenarios, and open learning. Candidates will learn via reading and interpreting text and data on a variety of business topics, authentic writing tasks (including letters, fax and reports), planning, drafting and editing, discussion and problem-solving tasks

Trainer's Profile
MANJINDARJIT KAUR began her teaching career as a primary school teacher. Being an extrovert and verbal person, she enrolled in a local university and graduated from University Science Malaysia with a degree in English Linguistics. She taught for 2 years in a secondary school and then enrolled in a Masters program on a part time basis and further obtained a Masters in TESL (UKM). Her first job as a part time tutor was at La Salle International School of Fashion and UiTM, Shah Alam. She is now teaching not only in colleges but also design courses for corporate companies, one of the examiner for National MUET Paper and an author of numerous books.

She has written books ranging from Grammar workbooks which are used in schools for various publishers like Fajar Bakti, Utusan Publications, Sasbadi, Ilmu Bakti and Longmans. She has also written a series of books on poems and short stories for children (Utusan Publications) and authored school textbooks which are currently being used in the national schools throughout the country. Among these are Form 5 English textbook, Year two (SK) English textbook, Year three (SK) English textbook and Year Six English textbook for SJK schools.

She has conducted numerous in - house and public training programs. Among the in house programs are Basic English, English for the Workplace, Communication English, English for Hotel Staff and Grammar Made Easy. Among the clientele are Pan Pacific Hotels, Istana Hotels, Ritz Carlton, Vistana Hotel, JW Marriot, Pangkor Laut Resort Sirim, Leisure Holidays, Jernih Insurance, MTD, Rotol, Lee Huat Plastics and Naza Manufacturing. She has also successfully conducted public programs on Business Writing Skills, English For Communicational Purposes, Spoken English Discourse for training companies like NAAM, Regal Solutions, GMT Consultancy, Customer Care Sdn Bhd and Change Management.
